Abu Dhabi Oil Receives “Minister of the Environment Award for Climate Action 2025” for its Innovative Mangrove Planting Activities on Mubarraz Island, UAE
Abu Dhabi Oil Co., Ltd. (hereafter, “the Company”) is pleased to announce that it has received the “Minister of the Environment Award for Climate Action 2025” (Advanced Introduction & Proactive Implementation Division <Mitigation & Adaptation>) in recognition of its demonstrative efforts to reduce carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions and protect coastlines through innovative mangrove planting approaches on Mubarraz Island in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). A representative of the Company received a certificate of commendation at the awards ceremony, held at Tokyo Shoken Kaikan (Chuo-ku, Tokyo) on December 5, 2025.
The Ministry of the Environment’s “Minister of the Environment Award for Climate Action,” a successor to the “Environment Minister's Award for Global Warming Prevention Activity” launched in FY1998, recognizes individuals and organizations that have made outstanding contributions to addressing climate change.
The Company has engaged in mangrove planting on Mubarraz Island in the Persian Gulf since 2006, incorporating the concept of Engineering With Nature¹. By reconfiguring artificial waterways and conducting soil remediation, tidal and salinity conditions were optimized, resulting in the creation of a mangrove forest spanning 17.5 hectares and comprising approximately 500,000 trees to date. A blue carbon survey conducted in 2022 measured the forest's cumulative CO₂ storage at 1,732 tons, with an annual carbon sequestration of approximately 37 tons, demonstrating the significant carbon storage capacity of both soil and trees. Additionally, mangrove forests help restore biodiversity by reducing wave energy, which prevents coastal erosion and extends the lifespan of shoreline protection structures, and by providing habitats for a diverse array of fish, birds, and crustaceans.

The judges highly commended the Company for leveraging the natural functions of mangroves alongside engineering techniques to reduce CO₂ and protect coastlines in a cost-effective manner under harsh climate conditions. They further highlighted that the project is expected to serve as a model for companies pursuing an integrated approach to climate change countermeasures and ecosystem conservation.
Going forward, the Company remains committed to ensuring a stable energy supply through crude oil exploration and production, while continuing its environmental preservation efforts and contributing to the realization of a sustainable society.
